Research and development

Agnaris invests in applied research: using data to understand how weather, soil and operations relate in the fields of the Northeast. We want to do this together with universities, research institutes and students, and we are open to new projects.

Research areas

Topics we want to work on with partners in the coming years.

  • Weather and agricultural operations

Forecasting non-workable days, harvest and planting windows, and the effect of climate variability on production.

  • Water and irrigation in the semiarid region

Efficient water use in irrigated fruit growing and water reserves for livestock.

  • Raw material quality

The relationship between cutting, transport and processing times and the quality that reaches the plant.

  • Remote sensing

Satellite imagery to monitor crops, pastures and yield by field block.

  • Agricultural data of the Northeast

Organizing and standardizing public and operational data from the region for use in research.

How to collaborate

We are open to research partnerships. Some of the ways we propose:

Who it is for

  • Researchers
  • Undergraduate and graduate students
  • Universities and institutes
  • Companies and cooperatives that want to fund research
  1. Projects with universities and institutes

Joint projects, including with funding agency support, on topics within our research areas.

  2. Student work

Co-supervision of undergraduate theses, master's and doctoral work that uses real problems and data from the field.

  3. Data access for research

Anonymized data, under a use agreement and with authorization from the operations that generated it.

  4. Open publication

Methods and results are published so that other groups can check and continue the work.

Rain and agricultural operations in Pernambuco: 20 years of data

The study analyzes twenty sugarcane seasons across the 43 municipalities of the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco to measure how rain determines the days on which cane can be cut, transported and crushed, and what that means for the operation and for raw material quality. The final goal is to find out how far ahead, and how accurately, non-workable days can be forecast.

Study questions

  1. How many non-workable days were there per season in each municipality, and how has that changed in twenty years?
  2. What is the relationship between rain, harvest days and crushing?
  3. How does rain before and during the season affect cane quality?
  4. How many days ahead can a non-workable day be forecast in a useful way?
